What to Wear for Your Family Photoshoot

One question I am often asked before a family photography session is “what should we wear for our family photos?”

I always say that the most important thing is choosing clothing that makes you feel comfortable and confident, and that reflects who you are! There are, however, a few other things you can consider if you want to get the absolute best out of your family photoshoot.

Here are 5 top tips for dressing your family for an outdoor photoshoot:

1: Coordinate but don’t match

Choosing a few complimentary colours and shades that work well together can really make a difference to the look of your photographs. For a cohesive look plain colours often work best and help to keep the attention on you and not your clothing. Adding texture and layers can help create visual interest in your images.

2. Consider the environment and season your images will be taken in.

Pastels and neutral shades are perfect for spring and summer, particularly for beach or flowery sessions! For woodland photoshoots richer, darker colours can look wonderful. In Autumn a combination of neutrals with some mustard or burgundy shades to coordinate with those beautiful leaves is always a good choice.

3. Avoid black and white (especially together!)

Instead consider choosing softer shades of ivory, cream or grey as these can be more flattering and they photograph much better.

4. Dress for comfort and movement.

I would recommend trying your outfit on a few days before your family photoshoot and making sure it is comfortable and well fitting. Check you have a full range of movement as you will likely be playing with, lifting and bending down to interact with your little ones!

5. Think timeless

You are going to keep these pictures forever so always think timeless rather than following current fashion trends when choosing your outfits. Classic styles never go out of fashion and so are a good choice to wear for your family photoshoot!

Of course these are just suggestions and ultimately the choice on what to wear for your family photoshoot is yours. You’ll want your photos to reflect your family and your style, so this might mean breaking a few of the ‘rules’! Please feel free to ask any questions or send photos of your outfits ahead of your family photoshoot and I will be happy to offer some advice.
